Thanksgiving at the Airport

Today I am grateful for my loving family, awesome friends, and being a teacher. Some might be cranky about spending Thanksgiving in three airports (Houston, Frankfurt, Bahrain) but I am thankful for the opportunity to continue growing as a learner.

This morning we left our hotel, with its holiday decorations already up and headed to the airport. We are traveling during the busiest travel day of the year, so we arrived with plenty of time. Our flight doesn't leave for another 2 1/2 hours, so many of us are blogging and Skyping (talking using live video on the computer).

So class, here is an opportunity to earn some group points. Whoever posts the correct answer first earns 5 points for your group:
1. What continent does the Saudi Arabia belong to?
2. What is the time difference between Los Angeles and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia?
3. Who is the God of the Muslims?

4. Who was their greatest prophet?
5. Name one thing Christians and Catholics have in common with Muslims.

Happy Thanksgiving y'all, and I'll try to blog from Frankfurt, Germany.

28 HOURS LATER

Could not blog from Germany because we could not connect to their wireless internet..it worked out because it was 1 AM in Los Angeles anyway!

So how does it feel to be on an 11 hour flight? Well, you have to come prepared. So I bought a copy of Rebel Angels by Libby Bray, the sequel to A Terrible Beauty which came highly recommended by Ms. Murphy, our rockin' librarian. Then, we slept a lot to get us accustomed to Saudi Time. Finally, I chatted with my neighbor, a gentleman from Copenhagen who entertained me with his stories about going out in shorts in 40 degree weather because this is considered "warm" up there. He also told me that small compact cars cost about $70,000 because of their tax system. I was astounded. Finally we landed in Frankfurt and got a chance to stretch out a bit and explore the airport.
Me, looking a little raggedy after 11 hours of flying.
Finally it was time to board our final flight to Bahrain which was 5 1/2 hours long. The flight was empty so we were able to spread out. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was playing, so I watched that. It was so hard to stay awake! Finally, we arrived in Bahrain, which is an island next to Saudi Arabia. It took a while to get through customs, but when we did, our bus was waiting for us. That bus had style! It was red velvet all over, with curtains, and tassels.
So now, I am getting ready to finally sleep in a bed in the Saudi Aramco compound. More on that tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Thank YOU Sharon, for your kind words. It is only a matter of time before you are a world traveler, exploring areas that interest you. It is my fortune, indeed, to be your teacher.
